The Narrative
Elon Musk is a South African-Canadian-American entrepreneur and visionary behind some of the most radical technological innovations of the 21st century. Born in Pretoria, he experienced a difficult childhood marked by bullying and a complex relationship with his father. At age 17, he left for North America, where after studying at the University of Pennsylvania, he co-founded the internet companies Zip2 and PayPal, the sale of which provided him with the capital for his true life missions. Subsequently, despite all expert advice, he invested almost his entire fortune into two extremely risky industries: electromobility (Tesla) and space exploration (SpaceX). Both companies stood on the brink of bankruptcy in 2008, but thanks to Musk's persistence and risky moves, they survived and disrupted entire industries. Today, Tesla is the world's most valuable carmaker and SpaceX dominates the global market for launching cargo into space. Musk's scope, however, is much broader. Through Neuralink, he seeks to connect the human brain with artificial intelligence; with the Boring Company, he wants to solve traffic jams with underground tunnels; and with the X platform (formerly Twitter), he aims to redefine public debate and journalism. His management style, characterized by extreme demands and impulsive decision-making, makes him one of the most discussed personalities of the present day. He is a well-known advocate for cryptocurrencies, particularly Dogecoin and Bitcoin.
Vision
Musk's philosophy stems from the belief that humanity faces existential risks that can only be overcome through radical technological progress. His main vision is to make humanity a multi-planetary species by colonizing Mars, which he considers an insurance policy for the preservation of consciousness. Concurrently, he strives to solve earthly problems by transitioning to sustainable energy (Tesla) and preparing humanity for a future with advanced AI (artificial intelligence). He believes that AI represents a risk that can only be countered by a "symbiosis" between human and machine through a high-bandwidth brain-computer interface (Neuralink), so that humans do not become obsolete or threatened by artificial intelligence in the future.

Elon Musk is not just an entrepreneur; he is a cultural phenomenon, a technological prophet, and for many, the most controversial figure of the 21st century. A man who decided to save humanity by making it multi-planetary, while simultaneously trolling world markets with memes on a social network he bought on a whim. His life story is a saga of incredible risk, genius bordering on madness, and a relentless drive to push the boundaries of both physical and social laws.
Childhood in Pretoria: Where Genius and Trauma are Born
The story of Elon Reeve Musk began on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. He was born to Errol Musk, a brilliant engineer, and Maye Musk, a model and dietitian. While he inherited persistence and charm from his mother's side, his relationship with his father shaped his darker sides and his desire to achieve the impossible. Musk describes his childhood as lonely and brutal. He wasn't the typical boy kicking a ball; instead, he read the entire Britannica and eventually the local library.
At school, Elon was a typical target for bullying. The most famous incident occurred when a group of boys threw him down the stairs and kicked him until he ended up unconscious in the hospital. This experience led to a deviated septum surgery many years later. He sought escape in computers and sci-fi. At just twelve years old, he programmed a space shooter called Blastar, which he sold to PC and Office Technology magazine for $500. It was his first technological exit.
Things weren't much better at home. After his parents' divorce, he decided to live with his father, a move he later described as a terrible mistake. He described Errol Musk as a person capable of "committing unimaginable evil." It was this toxic mix of intelligence, violence, and loneliness that created Musk's "thick skin" and zero tolerance for failure—traits that later defined his management style.
The Journey to the Promised Land and the First Millions
Musk knew that if he wanted to change the world, he had to get to the United States. At 17, he moved to Canada (thanks to his mother's citizenship) to avoid mandatory military service in apartheid-torn South Africa. He started from scratch – working on a relative's farm in Saskatchewan and cleaning boilers in a sawmill for $18 an hour, an extremely dangerous job that required wearing a hazmat suit for handling toxic waste.
He viewed education as a means to an end. After two years at Queen's University in Kingston, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned bachelor's degrees in economics from the Wharton School and physics from the College of Arts and Sciences. It was the combination of business thinking and physics "first principles" that became his most powerful weapon.
After a brief stop at Stanford, where he lasted only two days, he dove into the internet boom. With his brother Kimbal, he founded Zip2, a company providing online maps and directories for newspapers. They didn't have money for an apartment, so they slept in the office and showered at the local YMCA. He coded at night; the servers ran during the day. In 1999, Compaq bought Zip2 for $307 million. Musk walked away with $22 million. Instead of relaxing, he jumped into his next project: X.com.
The PayPal Mafia and the Birth of an Empire
X.com was intended to be a revolution in banking. After a merger with competitor Confinity, PayPal was born. Although Musk was ousted as CEO (allegedly during his honeymoon flight), he remained the largest shareholder. When eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002, Musk received $165 million. Most people would have retired to a private island at that point. Musk did the opposite – he bet everything on two crazy ideas: electric cars and rockets.
SpaceX and Tesla: Dancing on the Edge of Bankruptcy
2008 was a year of horror for Musk. Tesla, the car company he joined in 2004 and gradually took control of, was bleeding money and failing to produce a functional Roadster. SpaceX, founded in 2002 with the goal of colonizing Mars, had three failed launches of the Falcon 1 rocket behind it. Musk was in the middle of a messy divorce and had run out of money. He was sleeping on friends' couches.
If the fourth launch of Falcon 1 had failed, SpaceX would have ended. But on September 28, 2008, the rocket reached orbit. Based on this success, the company secured a $1.6 billion contract from NASA on Christmas Eve. Tesla narrowly avoided bankruptcy thanks to a last-minute investment. These events solidified Musk's self-belief and his willingness to risk everything.
Key Achievements and Innovations
- Rocket Reusability: The landing of the Falcon 9 first stage changed the economics of space flight, reducing costs tenfold and making SpaceX a monopoly powerhouse.
- Electromobility for the Masses: The Model S proved that an electric car could be sexy and high-performing. The Model 3 then brought this technology to the masses and forced the entire automotive industry to transform.
- Starlink: Building a global satellite network that provides internet even in the most remote corners of the world and plays a key role in geopolitical conflicts.
The King of Crypto and the Dogefather
Elon Musk's relationship with cryptocurrencies is a chapter in itself. His tweets have been able to move markets by tens of percent. In 2021, Tesla bought $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin and announced it would start accepting BTC as payment. The price of Bitcoin soared. A few months later, Musk reversed course, citing the environmental impact of mining, causing a massive crash.
Even more interesting is his relationship with Dogecoin. Originally a joke cryptocurrency, it became one of the world's largest cryptocurrencies by market cap thanks to Musk's support and his appearance on Saturday Night Live. Musk dubbed himself "The Dogefather" and continues to speculate about integrating DOGE into the X (Twitter) ecosystem.
TwitterFiles and the X Case
In 2022, Musk shocked the world by buying Twitter for $44 billion. This move was seen as an effort to protect freedom of speech ("free speech absolutist"), but it brought chaos. Musk fired 80% of the employees, unblocked controversial accounts (including Donald Trump), and renamed the network X with the vision of creating an "everything app" modeled after China's WeChat.
The move was financially disastrous—the company's value plummeted, advertisers fled—but politically and socially, it made Musk one of the most powerful media moguls in the world, directly influencing global discourse.
Controversies and the Dark Side
Musk's life is full of scandals. From smoking marijuana on Joe Rogan's podcast (which led to a NASA investigation) to allegations of sexual harassment of a flight attendant at SpaceX (which he denied) to his tweet about "funding secured" to take Tesla private, for which he was fined by the SEC.
Personally, he is known for his volatility. He has (admittedly) more than 10 children with several women, including singer Grimes and executive Shivon Zilis. His relationship with employees is legendary for its extreme demands, expectations of 80-hour work weeks, and "sleeping under the desk."
Vision: Neuralink, Optimus, and Mars
Musk's eyes are set on a future that resembles sci-fi novels. With Neuralink, he is trying to create a brain-computer interface that would allow people to communicate telepathically with AI and treat neurological diseases. The first patient with a chip in their brain can already control a mouse cursor with their thoughts.
In the field of AI, he founded xAI and is developing the chatbot Grok to compete with OpenAI (which he co-founded and later left). His Optimus robot is intended to replace human labor in factories in the future. But the main goal remains Mars. Musk believes the "window of opportunity" for space colonization could close at any time, which is why he is rushing the development of Starship, the largest rocket in human history.

I am the founder of the portal Kryptomagazin.cz. At the time, there was virtually nothing about cryptocurrencies on the Czech scene, so I decided to change that. I like the idea of decentralization, a bit of cypherpunk philosophy, and crypto-anarchy. The crypto industry is my world — I move and work in it every day, so I can no longer call it a hobby or pastime. I will always be happy to welcome you to your crypto magazine :)
